Fall is Here! 5 Quick Tips To Keep Your Kids Healthy This Fall! 1. HAND WASHING I know this sounds to simple to be true. Washing your hands is the #1 thing your kids can do to prevent cross contamination. Meaning - if you wash your hands a lot, you are much less likely to get sick. It is best to wash hands with soap, lather and rinse. If you do not have access to soap and water because you are on the run, use wipes or a hand sanitizer with Etheyl alcohol. I have my kids wash their hands upon entering the house, before eating, after getting off the subway or train, and a million times in between. We were recently at an amusement park, I handed out wipes after almost every ride! They laughed at me, but no one is sick. Its simply, fast and usually FREE. Hand washing isn't just for kids! One of my favorites is from Whole Foods and can be found here. 2. PROBIOTIC Recent research has found that a high quality probiotic for kids, will help build immunity in children. Probiotics are the "good" bacteria in our gut. Recent research has found probiotics have the ability to boost immunity in children and adults. Probiotics can also be found in yogurt and kiefer drinks. It is essential to use a high quality children's probiotic. Adult probiotics are not suitable for children. Probiotics can also be added to oatmeal in the morning, smoothies apple sauce ect. 3. ECHINACEA There are two varieties of Echinacea. "Echinacea purpurea" and "Echinacea agustafolia." I tend to recommend augustafolia. Echinacea can be taken as a preventative once a day during cold and flu season or when you think kids maybe getting a cold or flu. Echinacea for prevention is taken 3 weeks on and 1 week off. If you are already sick the dosage in this case the dosage would be more frequent throughout the day. Echinacea will provide a rapid immune response in the body and will increase white blood cell counts in the body. One of my favorites by Herb Pharm which is certified organic and alcohol free is available here. 4. GAN MAO LING
Gan mao ling is a Chinese medicine formula consisting of, Gang mei gen, San cha ku, Huang jing, Ban lan gen and Jin yin hua. This is one of my go to herbal formulas at the onset of a cold or flu for myself and my children. It should always be in your herbal medicine chest. I will even use this formula if I feel my children or I have been exposed to someone who is sick as a preventative. As with all herbs use a high quality brand which ensures good manufacturing practices and a company that tests for the quality of the herbs. This is important with ALL herbal supplements and more so with Chinese herbal supplements. Herbal supplements are given in a therapeutic dose and should be organic whenever possible and of the highest quality available. One of favorites is made by Plum Flower and can be found here! 5. Sleep & Hydration Getting enough sleep is also essential for keeping kids healthy. Research shows a lack of sleep will suppress the immune system. When we sleep our bodies are able to rejuvenate and naturally ward off infection. Children need anywhere from (10-14) hours of sleep a day depending on age. Hydration is also essential when we are trying to keep kids healthy. Our bodies are over 70 percent liquid being hydrated with elicit a healthy immune response. *As a disclaimer before taking any herbal supplements, please consult a qualified herbal health care practitioner.
